Also for those just starting out.  Tesla and cannon towers are great early game.  Focus those plus archers and IF generator.  Should be able to clear 1 to 2k waves easy with no heroes.

As far as build goes, I use a mage based build. It does require active skills or autoplay use.  With a full gold build and high lvl mines you should be able to outpace the gold cost per wave, I personally have purchased some autoplay time to minimize replay farming for gold and upgrades.

I would agree with xp and gold focus at start until max level. Everything with heroes and buildings should be geared around that.  Once you are max lvl take off the xp but keep the gold.  The longer you can use a max gold build the better.

% damage of skills have a ceiling (like 450%) but as heroes are continually levelled up, its base damage increases as well as the mana cost to cast the skill.

Archers with cold arrows for cc. Dont need to be leveled too high. Use all 3 summon units, lowest lvl possible. They die 1 hit but help slow and group mobs.  Focus on 2 or 3 aoe damage heroes like red/blue archwiz and storm archeon for majority of your damage.  Rest is support.  Dark archer for mana return - buff his attacksoeed with 1 or 2 other archers.m which dont need to be leveled past 31.  White and black archwiz for cooldown and increased damage.

My current build but I change it around a bit almost every day.

Ice slow build is good. I would not level the boreal knight much. They die in 1 hit, wont be worth it long term but they are still great to use even dying in 1 hit, they group up enemies and still slow them down.

Use tesla and cannon at first. Once you no longer need xp replace that with ice tower. I am not a huge fan of the repeater.

I would also recommend Naga for sure as a hero, one of his promotions is a chance to freeze. Elder yeti could also be fun with that set up. They don't need to be leveled high for their skills to be very useful if you want to focus on archers as primary damage. Try to get castle to lvl 120 for the back towards. You will love the ID Generator.
