Castle Defender: Hero Idle Defense TD Tip #1: Avoid Upgrading your Castle's Bow and Wall.
Upgrading the Bow will increase it's damage per second including Critical Chance & Damage.
Upgrading the Wall defense will increase it's HP and Armor while the MP and Mana Regeneration will increase after a few levels.
Avoid upgrading those two castle's upgrades. You can leave them unleveled, and use your coins for heroes upgrade instead.

Castle Defender: Hero Idle Defense TD Tip #2: Heroes Upgrade.

The best investment to upgrade for is the heroes!
However you need to identify first what heroes are best to upgrade.
First thing you need to know is there are 3 types of rarity for heroes.
White < Green < Blue.
White is the easiest to obtain in summons, yet the weakest rarity in the hero.
Don't upgrade white heroes since every upgrade provides little benefits compared to other rarity.
Green is a good rarity and you can get them at normal summons, they provide good stat upgrades over the white heroes.
Blue is the most powerful rarity but it will be difficult to obtain them from normal summons.
Green Heroes are probably the best to upgrade (if you don't have Blue heroes), since they provide good stats compared to upgrading the castle bow's, walls and white heroes.

Castle Defender: Hero Idle Defense TD Tip #3: Use Gems for Energy Replenishment.

Each stage cost 1 energy to enter.
Energy is important on your character progress since if you beat the stage, you will get coins, and other important materials that are essential to upgrade your heroes.
If you run out of energy, you can easily replenish it using gems.
It only requires 2 gems for each energy to be replenish.
So if you run out of energy, you can replenish your energy to 20(max) with 40 gems.
If you are stuck with your current stage, you can use your spare energy to repeat the stages you want to get coins & materials.
